Our Commitment to Climate Action

At SPACE Architects, we are committed to urgent and meaningful climate action.

Through our ZeroThreeZero initiative, we are aligning with the Science-Based Targets to help limit global warming to 1.5°C.

Carbon Neutral in 2025

We are proud to say that in 2025, SPACE Architects are Carbon Neutral, verified against Science-Based Targets criteria.

Since 2018, we have reduced our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 48%. Our current carbon footprint is:

  • Scope 1 (direct emissions): 19 tonnes CO₂e
  • Scope 2 (indirect energy emissions): 48 tonnes CO₂e

As we use renewable electricity, our Scope 2 emissions are offset at source.

To offset our remaining Scope 1 emissions, we invest in a woodland portfolio that includes:

  • 20 tonnes of retired CO₂e credits in Nii Kaniti Forest, Peru
  • 20 tonnes of ex-ante credits at Lauder Common, Scotland
  • 500+ trees planted annually at Whitton Wood, England

These efforts ensure that our carbon neutrality is achieved in line with the Science-Based Targets methodology.

On Track for Net Zero

For SMEs like ours, Net Zero is defined as actively reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions whilst offsetting the remaining emissions. Based on this definition, in 2025 we have achieved Net Zero.

However, our target is to be Net Zero for Scope 1,2 and 3 by actively reducing all emissions as much as possible before using offsets for any unavoidable emissions.

Our Scope 3 baseline (2021) is 388 tCO₂e, and we are committed to reducing this by 50% by 2030.

Our Path to Net Zero

We believe everyone at SPACE Architects plays a vital role in achieving our Net Zero goals. Here’s how we’re making it happen:

  • Net Zero Plan - We have developed a clear plan with targets for Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, alongside actions and reporting strategies.
  • Sustainable Procurement - We’re reviewing our purchasing practices to reduce consumption and waste.
  • Collaborative Design - We’re partnering with clients and collaborators to deliver more sustainable, low-carbon buildings.
  • Investing in People - We’re building our team’s knowledge and skills through continuous learning, research, and innovation.
  • Sustainable Standards - We apply our Group Policies and Management Systems, certified to ISO 14001 and ISO 9001, to integrate sustainable design across all projects.
  • Onsite Renewables - We’re investing in onsite energy solutions, such as photovoltaic systems.
  • Transparency - We’re committed to sharing our progress with clients, partners, and stakeholders
