The CENE (Constructing Excellence in the North East) focuses to deliver improved industry performance resulting in a demonstrably better built environment. The awards are recognised across the North East Built Environment as the biggest and brightest celebration of best practice.
Their top award, the Building Project of the Year award, promises that all parties involved (the designers, constructors and clients) will be proud and inspired by the project. Additionally, it will demonstrate a great team working between the client and entire supply chain; it will have delivered before the programmed completion date, below approved cost and to quality exceeding expectation while delivering the highest health and safety standards; achieved the lowest environmental impacts; delivered outstanding customer satisfaction; and demonstrated the highest levels of the application of best practice.
Released yesterday, their shortlist confirms that TWO SPACE Architects projects have been selected.
The recently completed and restored Globe Theatre in Stockton-on-Tees made the list boasting a 3,000 capacity internationally renowned venue fit for the 21st Century. Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council cabinet member for regeneration and housing, Nigel Cooke, said that the venue has put Stockton “back on the map as a live entertainment destination”.
Also to make the shortlist, the Three Mile Inn – A stunning gastropub and much-loved landmark at the heart of Gosforth, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. This popular social hotspot has been completely remodelled, revamped and extended. As well as its traditional bar use it now includes the 64 bed Great North Hotel, conference facilities, restaurants, and extensive terrace and external seating areas. Three Mile Operations Director, Atul Malhotra, said “a vast amount of thought and investment has gone into creating Three Mile and always with the customer and guest in mind”.
David Coundon, SPACE Director, remarked “with such a high standard of competition, SPACE Architects are incredibly proud to have two projects feature on the Building Project of the Year award shortlist and are looking forward to 8th October 2021 when the winners will be announced”.
