SPACE Architects are proud to have been a part of a major restoration project funded by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund that transformed this beautiful art deco building into a 3,000 capacity internationally-renowned venue fit for the 21st Century.
The iconic Grade 2 listed building had stood empty since 1997 and has undergone a full refurbishment with a smaller 250 capacity venue – The Link – opening in the adjoining building which is situated in the heart of Stockton High Street. The Globe originally opened its doors in 1935 and has hosted many high-profile international acts ranging from The Beatles and The Rolling Stones to Sadler’s Wells Ballet and the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company.
David Coundon, Director at SPACE Architects, said:“It has been thoroughly rewarding to be given the opportunity to nurture this former theatre and performance venue back to its original Art Deco splendour whilst at the same time expanding and updating the facilities to create a truly sustainable entertainment and cultural centre fit for the 21st Century. This venue is now set to become a hub that can entertain and inspire people, a place that can champion cultural life, and a place that meets the Council’s ambitions for regeneration and growth.”
The Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and housing, Nigel Cooke, said that the venue has put Stockton “back on the map as a live entertainment destination”.
The redevelopment has given a nod to a modern audience with new features that includes flexible standing and seated configuration, new purpose-built bars, VIP areas, dressing room sites and orchestra pits. The venue is expected to be a huge asset for the local economy attracting up to 200,000 visitors each year bringing in millions of pounds.
Stockton Globe general manager, Jo Ager, said:“We are so excited to announce that the day we have all been waiting for is finally upon us; the restoration of the Stockton Globe is complete and it is absolutely incredible. We simply cannot wait to throw the doors open, welcome people in and show this phenomenal venue off.”
