Tom Balsdon, born in Cumbria and raised in Northumberland, brings a wealth of hands-on experience from over five years in the construction industry. This practical background, combined with his education at Newcastle University, fuels his passion for architecture. "After years of using drawings to guide construction, I developed an interest in applying my practical knowledge and design instincts by becoming the one creating those drawings," Tom explains. Outside of work, Tom is passionate about health and fitness, running every day and staying active through various hands-on projects, including working on his car. He is particularly inspired by SPACE Architects' emphasis on innovation and is looking forward to contributing fresh ideas while expanding his skills in a dynamic environment. "Being part of the innovative processes at SPACE is something I find highly rewarding,"he adds.
Also joining us is Euan Ellis from Ripon, North Yorkshire, who discovered his passion for architecture through art, combining logical and rhythmic forms with vibrant experimentation. A Newcastle University graduate, Euan's BA project focused on designing a retirement home that bridged generational gaps through community engagement with street art. Having worked in hospitality for six years, Euan developed strong communication skills and confidence, traits that he brings to his new role. He enjoys staying active through running and basketball and is always eager to try new sports. He also took a brief, if not entirely successful, stab at football with the Newcastle University Architecture Society, confessing with a laugh that he's "got two left feet." Having grown up in the countryside of Ripon, Euan developed an appreciation for nature and history, often enjoying walks with his dog, Mac, to Fountains Abbey. "Having grown up in a historic town, I'm really interested in the re-use of existing buildings and how this can reduce our industry's negative impact on the climate," says Euan. Euan is eager to learn from SPACE's approach to sustainability and contribute to meaningful projects that prioritise the re-use of embodied carbon.
All three graduates bring unique perspectives and skills to SPACE Architects, further enriching the diversity and ingenuity within the team. They are already making their mark, supported by SPACE's comprehensive graduate program, which includes seminars, CPD sessions, and opportunities to work closely with our Architects and Directors.
