Previously a university residence, the housing design scheme by Space Architects for this Newcastle suburb sought a contemporary context to contrast the Victorian, Edwardian and 1920’s housing in the surrounding area. The team borrowed the massing concepts from Edwardian era housing to create a real sense of place as well as offering other development opportunities and supportive parking of 130%.
Additionally, the site is a designated conservation area, with existing trees protected by Tree Preservation Orders, meaning that ours, along with any other new development, needs to be planned around the landscape and remain subservient to the original buildings and treescape.
The result is a layout that offers new housing in a popular part of the city while incorporating the best principals of regeneration and creativity.
