A golfers’ paradise, the Close House golf course in Northumberland is one of the most challenging new courses to be built and required an appropriate clubhouse to match. Space Architects worked on the project for two years, creating a 1,000m², purpose built, luxury golf clubhouse and new 6,540 yard championship 18 hole golf course, which was opened by then world number one golfer Lee Westwood.
The solution takes into account a challenging site within grounds that comprise an area of designated green belt land, Grade II* listed Close House Mansion, next to the World Heritage Site, Hadrian’s Wall.
The result is an inspiring presence that was deliberately kept to a modest size, opening up vistas within the landscape and yet also a contemporary, eye-catching composition which nods to Close House Mansion’s 18th century origins.
